Hinton explodes for 5 TDs

Ryan Hinton commenced his senior campaign at Hanover Park hogging the spotlight under the lights at Hamilton Field in Dover on Friday night as the Hornets rolled to a 33-13 victory over the Tigers in an Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division gridiron confrontation. The 5-11, 165-pound Hinton churned out 159 yards rushing on 17 attempts while scoring four touchdowns on the ground and combining with quarterback Glen Paladino on a 61-yard TD strike in the opening quarter. Hinton, a senior is the IHC - Hills Division Player of the Week selected by njhsfb.com and the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association.
Hinton opened the scoring for the season when he bolted five yards into the end zone and put a second six-pointer on the board when he scampered 27 yards to paydirt. The 61-yard TD pass play upped the Hornets' advantage to 20-0 before the first quarter ended. It was a scoreless second quarter and Dover ended the Hornet's bid for a shutout when the Tigers connected on a 26-yard TD pass in the third quarter to cut the margin to 20-7 with 12 minutes remaining on the game clock.
Hinton busted a dozen yards to the end zone with three minutes gone in the fourth quarter. and then plunged one yard over the goal line to up the Hornets' advantage to 33-7 before Dover scored the final six points of the game on a 12-yard pass play.
On Friday night, Hanover Park welcomes Parsippany Hills to East Hanover with the kickoff set for 7:00PM. The Vikings, who finished 10-2 last season and were co-champions of the Hills Division with Weequahic, opened the season on Saturday afternoon at home against Chatham.
Kate Vedder's debut as the head coach of the Hanover Park girls' soccer program was a major success on Saturday in Hanover Township. The Lady Hornets, coming off a 7-12-1 mark in 2006, made a statement by breezing to a 7-0 rout of Dover to open the Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division schedule.
Midway through the opening half, the Lady Hornets had exploded to a 6-0 advantage. Junior forward Kellie Funk ignited the scoring parade, netting a pair of goals while junior defender Lauren Nalbach and senior midfielder Nicole Pereira each chipped in with a goal and assist. Senior midfielder Kristin Blake, frosh midfielder Erin Rawson and Kristina Russo tallied goals while sophomore midfielder Kelly Rosenfeld distributed an assist. Senior keeper Dana DeBarros stopped the only official shot on goal to preserve the shutout.
Vedder's varsity roster includes 10 returning letterwinners, eight of whom are seniors with Funk and Nalback being juniors. The senior veterans are defenders Courtney Brown and Gia Infantolino along with midfielders Alex Kelly, Alyssa Marchitto and Jayme Yeskel in addition to Blake, Danielle Dorey pus Jayme Yeskel.
Senior outside hitter Valerie Lanza spiked seven kills but Hanover Park dropped a 2-0 verdict to Mount Olive to open the 2007 Iron Hills Conference girls volleyball campaign on Friday afternoon. Junior setter Katie Solomon distributed aa assists while senior libero Alicia Capparucci scooped up a dozen digs but the Lady Hornets dropped games of 25-23 and 25-16.
Colleen Brady begins her fourth year as the head coach of the Hanover Park girls' tennis team that finished 2-12 a year ago. Brady's lineup includes six returning letterwinners, three of which are seniors. They are Stephanie Brown, Christina Podesta and Dana Verona while the junior class is represented by Gaby Cohen and Nikki Elman. Anna Maria Farro lettered as a frosh and this year's top freshman, Brooke Lieberman, is projected for a slot on the varsity.
It was a dismal opening day for the Hornets on the boys soccer field, as Dover coasted to a 7-0 shutout over Hanover Park. It was the coaching debut for Don Manfria who took over the program that went 2-16 last season. Manfria's roster included six returning letterwinners, two of whom, defender Adam Flanner and midfielder Jason Glassman, are seniors. The other veterans are all junior midfielders. They are Jimmy Cicchino, Dave Gallo, Matt Rawson and Gerald Zarra.
