Penney, Cromartie finish 1-2 in Randolph XC Invitational

Lauren Penney and Ashley Cromartie opened the 2007 girls' cross-country campaign with a 1-2 finish in the Group 3 Varsity Division of the Randolph Cross-Country Invitational contested Friday evening at Freedom Park. Both seniors, Penney broke the tape in 18:31.64 while Cromartie picked up the silver medal when she was clocked in 19:13.13.
Coach Sherry Sikora, starting her fifth season, guided the Lady Gaels to a perfect 8-0 dual meet record while capturing the championship trophies in the Iron Hills Conference, Morris County and NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group IV sectional meets. With juniors Kathy Alexander and Erica Jobe plus sophomore Britt Hendrickson returning the starting line as letterwinners, the Lady Gaels' chances of repeating are further enhanced by the addition of frosh Mary Migton who placed fourth in Friday's race with a clocking of 19:39.43. Aimee Bischoff raced to a third place finish in the freshmen girls 2655-meter run when she was clocked in 11:04.59.
Roxbury dropped a 2-0 verdict to Randolph in girls' volleyball on Friday to open the season. The Gaels lost by scores of 25-20 and 25-12 despite an impressive effort up front at the net by senior middle blocker Haley O'Sullivan who was credited with four blocked shots. Sophie Guderlan, another senior middle blocker, spike three kills and blocked three shots.
Outshot 12-1, Roxbury remained competitive to the end as goalkeepers Tiffany Henderson, a junior, and sophomore Sarah Struby combined to make 11 saves but the Lady Gaels were blanked 1-0 by Morris Knolls in the opening game of the field hockey campaign on Friday.
