Marauders Sports Highlights for Week Ending September 30, 2001

Barretts' goals spur Lady Marauders in MCT

Sophomore forward Alyssa Barrett netted a pair of goals to advance Mount Olive in the Morris County Girls Soccer Tournament by defeated Dover 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The win upped the Lady Marauders overall record to 3-4-1 while the Tigers dropped to 1-5.
Barrett opened the scoring two minutes into the game and the Lady Marauders never trailed. Barrett struck again before the halftime break, directing a cross from senior Tracy Smith into the Tigers cage as Mount Olive left the field at intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Dover narrowed the gap to one goal 11 minutes into the second half but Smith iced the verdict with an insurance tally coming with one minutes remaining on the game clock.
Goalie Christrian Chatman recorded the "W" between the pipes as she came up with eight saves.
Keeper Graig Lowering stopped eight shots on goal as Mount Olive blanked Voorhees 3-0 in a non-conference boys soccer match on Saturday in Flanders. Michael Rowe opened the scoring and Kirk Castellano made it 2-0 before halftime. Sean MacCauley completed the scoring with the only goal of the second half.
A day earlier, the Marauders defeated Summit 3-2 in an IHC - Hills Division match contested in Flanders. Adam Hill and Greg Nelson tallied goals in the opening half as Mount Olive led 2-1 at intermission. The Hilltoppers knotted the contest in the second half before senior Vic DiColo tallied the game-winning goal off an assist from Rowe, a senior midfielder, who also had assisted on an earlier goal.
Mount Olive blanked West Essex in a varsity girls volleyball match on Friday. Senior outside hitter Michelle Romano spiked three kills and delivered five aces to lead the Lady Marauders to victory by scores of 15-11, 15-7. Her classmate Carolina Bilbao was credited with six kills as Mount Olive upped its record to 5-2.
West Morris edged Mount Olive 2-1 in overtime on Saturday as the Lady Marauders suffered their first setback of the field hockey campaign, dropping to 5-1-1. The Highlanders struck first following a scoreless first half before Heathetr Grimm converted a penalty-stroke to knot the game for the Lady Marauders. Goalie Chealsey Holland came up with nine saves.
Mount Olive remained winless in six matches after Lenape Valley posted a 5-0 win over the Marauders in a non-conference girls tennis match on Tuesday.

McDonough's goals spur Mount Olive past Mendham

Alicia McDonough netted a pair of goals to power Mount Olive to a 3-1 victory Mendham in an Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division varsity field hockey match played in Mendham on Saturday. The win was the fourth against one tie for the unbeaten Lady Marauders.
Nicole Turner added the other goal with Tanya Kuhn and Dabielle Miran=da picked up assists. Goalkeeper Chelseay Holland turned in a strong effort between the pipes, coming up with 10 saves.
Mount Olive swept to a 2-0 win over Summit in girls volleyball on Thursday evening. Senior middle blocker Lauren Schneider blasted six kills, scooped up four digs and blocked two shots to spur the Marauders to a 15-6, 15-13 win over the Hilltoppers. Senior setter Michelle Klub chipped in with five kills, two aces, four digs and seven assists for the Marauders who upped their record to 4-1.

Smith's goal topples Highlanders

Tracie Smith netted the sole goal of the game 34 minutes into the opening half as Mount Olive blanked West Morris 1-0 for its first "W" of the 2001 girls soccer campaign on Saturday. Kyrie Lillo assisted on the goal while keeper Christina Chapman preserved the shutout by turning aside all 12 Highlander shots on goal.
In boys soccer, Graig Lovering stopped 10 shots on goal to spur the Marauders to a 3-0 shutout over Hanover Park on Wednesday in Flanders. Steve DeGenaro headed in the game-winning tally in the opening half while Victor Torres and Greg Nelson iced the decision with second half tallies. Xavier Torres and Vic DiColo were credited with solo goals.
DiColo and Nelson tallied the goals for the Marauders in a 2-1 overtime win against Parsippany Hills on Friday. Nelson converted a rebound into a first half goal and DiColo snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the second OT period off an assist from Nelson.
Senior forward Leslie DeSimone netted a pair of goals to spur the Lady Marauders into a 2-1 lead by halftime of a non-divisional field hockey match with Iron Hills Conference foe Livingston ion Essex County of Friday. Nicole O'Connor netted the only goal of the second half for Mount Olive while the Lancers rebounded to knot the game at 3-3. Goalie Chealsey Holland came up with six saves while her teammates peppered the Lancers cage with 24 shots.
Melissa Dawson turned in a hat trick performance to propel the Lady Marauders to a 7-0 rout of Morris Hills in an IHC - Hills Division matchup on Wednesday. DeSimone chipped in with a pair of goals and dished off three assists while Lindsay Helwig and Danielle Miranda also tickled the Scarlet Knights' twine.
Mount Olive opened the girls cross country campaign with a 15-50 rout of West Essex in North Caldwell. Ashley Behre led the way to the finish in 22 minutes, 48 seconds. She was followed by teammates Charlotte Burkly (22:58), Lindsay Samman (22:59), Alison Sulley (23:13), Wendy McCardle (23:46), Mary Grace Henry (24:12), Gauri Rastogi (25:00), Kim Friedland (26:34), Cynthia Bengal (28:39) and Megan Perisse (30:45).
In the Roxbury Invitational on Saturday, Mount Olive placed second to Hillsborough in the Junior/Senior Boys Division. Andrew Waruingi led the Marauders to the finish, placing fifth in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. Mike Roberts (16:49) and Andrew Sabella (16:49) followed in eighth and ninth place. Jerry Whittaker was runnerup in the Sophomore Division, completing the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 34 seconds.
Senior outside hitter Casey Roman blasted three kills, delivered two aces and scooped up five digs while her classmate Michelle Roman chipped in with four kills, four aces and five digs as Mount Olive blanked Hanover Park 2-0 in a varsity girls volleyball match on Friday. The Marauders upped their record to 3-1 winning games of 15-8, 15-3.
A day earlier, Mount Olive blanked Morristown 2-0, posting victories of 15-10 and 18-16. Senior setter Michelle Klub recorded eight aces, seven assists and three digs to key the Lady Marauders.
In a non-divisional matchup of IHC teams, Mount Olive dropped a 5-0 verdict to West Morris. Bonnie Poretskin, the top Marauder, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Samantha Le in the No. 1 singles matchup.

Marauders Sports Highlights for Week Ending September 9, 2001

Lady Marauders impressive on opening day

It was an impressive debut for the Mount Olive field hockey team as the Lady Marauders blanked a perennially tough Summit team by a score of 3-0 in Flanders on Friday afternoon.
Coming off a 10-8-2 record in 2000, Brigitte Geiger entered her 19th season at the helm of the Lady Maruaders' program with 10 returning letterwinners and Mount Olive quickly demonstrated they are an experienced, talented squad that will be in the running for the Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division title.
Sophomore forward Danielle Miranda, one of the veteran monogram winners, displayed her speed at the outset when she netted the first goal of the season for the Lady Marauders in the opening half. Junior forward Melissa Dawson and junior midfielder Alicia McDonough, both letterwinners, iced the victory with second half tallies. Picking up assists were senior forward Leslie DeSimone who recorded 13 goals and 16 assists as a junior, and sophomore forward Lindsay Helwig.
Senior goalie Chealsey Helwig stopped all eight Hilltopper shots on goal to record the shutout "W" between the pipes.
In the boys soccer IHC opener played Friday in Rockaway, the Marauders dropped a 3-0 decision to the Scarlet Knights. Head coach Peter Morgan began his fourth season with only five returning letterwinners following a 9-8-4 season in 2000. The Scarlet Knights, who were 8-8-2 a year ago, fielded a lineup with 10 veteran letterwinners and peppered junior keeper Greg Lovering with 15 official shots goal while his teammates managed only five at the Hills cage.
