Marauders streak snapped at 2 |

| Looking for its first 3-0 start since 1985, Mount Olive
entertained Hanover Park in an Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division gridiron encounter on Friday evening in Flanders.
The Marauders hopes for achieving their third straight victory were bright until late in the second quarter when
the Hornets scored twice and went on to post a 35-7 triumph. Hanover Park got on the board in the opening quarter when quarterback James Picariello tossed a 10-yard TD strike to D.J. Cunningham cutting acrioss the middle. Mount Olive deadlocked the game at 7-7 in the second quarter when senior quarterback Larry Sartor tucked in the ball and raced 35-yards to the end zone on a fourth-and-four situation. Bryan Lyko split the uprights with his extra point placement and the game was knotted. With 4 minutes, 47 seconds left in the first half, Joe Monticello bolted over the goal line from two yards out to cap off a 10-play, 72-yard march for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. A Marauder turnover followed on the next series and the Hornets needed only five plays to put the pigskin in the end zone and build their advantage to 21-7 by intermission. Another Marauder fumble midway through the third quarter ended any hopes of a rally as the Hornets defensive unit shut down the Marauders running back tandem of Josh Adieyefeh and Siraji Ziyad who had both rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the first two games. Afdieyefeh toted the pigskin a dozen times, churning out 75 yards rushing while Ziyad was limited a 18 yards on 15 attempts. Sartor led the Marauders rushing, picking up 70 yards on 16 tries. Mount Olive has a bye this weekend with Dover looming as the opponent for the following week. The Tigers trailed West Essex 24-0 at halftime on Saturday night and can be beat by the Marauders. Coach Jimm Kramer has two weeks to prepare the Marauders for this game and several of the players were in attendance at the game in Dover on Saturday evening. Dover travels to play Parsippany on Friday evening, providing the Marauders' coaching staff with another opportunity to scout the Tigers in person. The key to success will be which team can control the tempo in the trenches. If the Marauder linemen can open some holes, look for Afdieyefeh and Ziyad to run to daylight and put points on the board while maintaining ball control. Dover can be explosive so another key will be to limit the number of plays the Tigers can run from scrimmage. |

Milner, Yousef open the holes as Marauders snap losing skein |

Compliments of Mount Olive Chronicle |
| It had been so long since Mount Olive experienced the thrill
of victory on opening day that even third-year head coach Jimm Kramer, a member of the Class of 1987, could not
be specific following the Marauders 13-0 shutout over Voorhees on Friday evening Flanders. "My senior year we went 7-3 and made the state playoffs during the 1986 season," said a smiling Kramer after Mount Olive snapped a 10-game winless skein that had extended back to the 1999 campaign. "None of can remember the last time we won our opening game but we think it might have been in 1992." Last season when the Marauders suffered the agony of defeat all 10 games, the roster included only five seniors and six juniors while the positive side was that 14 sophomores received enough varisty minutes to earn letters. This game-day experience and a comprehensive off-season conditioning program set the stage for a much-improved Marauder team to race on the field Friday evening. With a pair of senior offensive guards leading the way in the battle of the trenches, two fleet veteran junior running backs surpassed the century mark in rushing. "Dave Milner is a three-year starter at guard and the one we look to lead our offensive charge," added Kramer. "His running mate Ayman Yousef earned a varsity letter last year but has upgraded his level of play to give us two quick-hitting and agile blockers." Josh Adieyefeh and Siraji Ziyad were a pair of sophomore running blocks last season who received their baptism under fire. On Friday evening, the duo took turns grinding out yardage and turned Kramer's game plan into the winning scheme as both reached the 100-yard mark in rushing while the Marauders turned the concept of ball-control into the formula. "We run five basic plays and in three of them, I don't even know who is getting the ball," continued Kramer. "Our quarterback Larry Sartor did an outstanding job with our split-back veer offense, rolling out on the 3-progression option format. He picked up over 70 yards rushing while Josh added 105 and Siraji piled up 100. Larry only passed three times, completing one for six yards but our intent was to keep the ball on the ground and he did a great job reading the defensive formations." While they will improve with each game, the Marauders' offensive tackles and just getting started on their varsity careers. Chris Sartor, Larry's younger brother, made his varsity debut at one OT slot while junior Roger McKelvie (6-3, 260) was the starter on the other side of the line. "Roger never competed in organized football until last year," stated Kramer, "and I am very pleased with the performance he turned in. As the season progresses, I look for he and Chris to get better every game." Anchoring the offensive front wall was junior Rich Kostovski who was the starting nose guard last season but has been moved to a starting DT slot this season. Junior Kevin Halonski (6-5, 200) spearheaded the "D" from his inside linebacker slot and led the defensive unit with nine tackles. "To record a shutout is always a team effort and this game was no different," said Kramer. "We worked hard in pre-season to improve our defensive unit that gave up a lot of points last season. We got bigger and stronger in the off-season and it showed against Voorhees." Ziyad stole the spotlight at crucial moments, scoring a pair of touchdown runs of 19 and 36 yards in the second half while picking off a Vikings aerial with 37 seconds left on the game clock to lock up the victory. "We used last year to gain game-day experience," said Kramer. "We made them believe they could get the job and they trusted us, focused on their assignments and went out and did it." Just because the Marauders have broken the losing streak, Kramer pointed out the building process is still continuing. "We had three sophomores provide positive impact immediately and I look for several others to play important roles as the season progresses," added Kramer. "Chris Hoyt showed a nose for the ball from his inside linebacker slot and Brian Lyko not only handed our kicking assignments, he also looked good at cornerback and I already mentioned the fine job Chris Sartor did on the offensive line and he also spelled the starters on the defensive line." Todd DiNetta and Mike Gilbert will coach the underclassmen who will see action in the junior varsity games. "We need to upgrade our depth at most positions so Todd and Mike will be on the lookout to see which JV players are positioning themselves to become important parts of the varsity scene," said Kramer. Sean Smyth and Frank Panek are coaching and teaching the 25 members of the Mount Olive frosh squad. "The varsity learning process begins with out freshmen program," added Kramer. "In our rec program, the coaches used the basic Delaware winged-t so now we have to begin teaching the basics of our veer formations." Mount Olive travels to Parsippany on Friday evening to battle the newly-named Red Hawks in a matchup of Hills Division rivals as the Iron Hills Conference season opens. Parsippany was routed 41-14 by Watchung Hills of the Skyland Conference on Friday evening in Warren. The Warriors exploded to a 35-14 lead by intermission and coasted in the second half. Parsippany ground out three first downs on its first possession but that was the extent of the Red Hawks' attack. They scored twice in the second quarter on a 95-yard kickoff return by Klayton Scott and a 40-yard return of a fumble by Dustin Petronaci. This is a game that a focused Marauder can and will put into the win column. Look for the Adieyefeh/Ziyad combo to run to daylight and when the final whistle is blown, the Marauders will be 2-0 for the season but their passing game will be still be untested. |
