Gaels Sports Highlights for Week Ending October 7, 2001

Kelly's goal rebounds Gaels to victory column

Roxbury displayed an aggressive attack, rebounding from a 3-1 opening day loss on Friday against West Morris to record a 1-0 victory over Morris Hills in a non-divisional matchup of Iron Hills Conference field hockey squads played Saturday in Rockaway.
Coming off a 3-14-2 record under second-year head coach Heather Holly, the Gaels dominated the action at the offensive end of the field, peppering Scarlet Knights goalie Lauren Van Dollen with 28 official shots on goal. However, the only goal of the contest came in the opening half when he Gaels junior left inner, Kaitlyn Kelly, converted a penalty stroke when she drilled the ball into the Scarlet Knights' cage.
Jen Midgette, the Gaels' goalie, stopped the only official Hills shot on goal to post the shutout "W" as senior defenders Michele Capra and Brie Dixon along with junior defenders Melissa Melillo and Melissa Tindall.
Other returning letterwinners for the Gaels are senior forwards Rochkika Goswami and Janet Jones plus junior Raechel Santucci as well as junior midfielder Nellaney Mesitrich.
A day earlier, Kelly netted the first goal of the season for the Gaels when she tickled the Highlanders twine with 6 minutes, 17 seconds remaining on the game clock as the Gaels averted a shutout while trailing 4-0 at the time.
Midgette was shelled with 14 shots by the Highlanders as three escaped her stick in the opening half, including the first two by Karen Perry as West Morris never trailed.
Keeper Anthony Wright stopped five of six shots on goal but his teammates failed to score as Roxbury dropped a 1-0 decision to Morristown in a season-opening IHC - Iron Division match played Friday afternoon in Succasunna.
In varsity girls soccer, Roxbury was on the short end of a 2-1 score in an IHC - Iron Division opener contested Friday afternoon in Succasunna.

Gaels Sports Highlights for Week Ending September 30, 2001

Chung's goals cage Panthers

Senior forward Billy Chung supplied the offensive power as Roxbury blanked East Orange 2-0 in an Iron Hills Conference - Iron Division boys soccer match played Friday in Essex County. The win improved the Gaels' overall record to 4-2-2.
Chung netted the game-winning goal in the first half with an assist from Ryan Ellsworth and the same duo combined on an insurance tally in the second half. It was the fifth and sixth goals of the campaign for Chung.
Keeper Anthony Wright excelled between the posts, stopping four Panther shots on goal.
In girls volleyball, Roxbury defeated Bogota for the first time in three years as the Gaels claimed a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Jackie Cancelliere delivered 10 service points, five of them in a row, spiked eight kills and scooped up 26 digs to lead the Gaels to victory by scores of 15-12, 6-15, 15-4.
Senior Cherilyn Kromka picked up 10 digs while junior setter Shelly Schultz delivered three service aces and was credited with 42 assists. At the net, Kat Piso spiked eight kills and blocked four shots while Jenn Spargo topped the Gaels with five blocks.
On Friday, the Gaels defeated Randolph 2-0 as Cancelliere spiked eight kills. The Gaels coasted to wins of 15-4, 15-4 with Piso scooping up seven digs.
Roxbury squeaked out a 1-0 victory over Parsippany Hills in an IHC - Iron Division girls soccer match on Tuesday. Frosh Jessica Holmes took a pass from Erica Peschken and directed the ball into the Vikings cage for the only goal of the game. Peschken had dribbled to the right side of the goal and made a cross to Holmes who headed the game-winning goal past Viking goalie Taryn Humphrey.
West Morris defeated the Gaels 4-1 in an IHC - Iron Division girls tennis match. Jacqueline Tomko salvaged the team point for the Gaels by defeating Lora Belkin 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at second singles.
The match was closer than the final score indicated as the Gaels top doubles tandem of Kim Russo and Kristina Thompson lost in three sets to Sarah Atsamaral and Emily Witko by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The second doubles duo of Tiffany Chan and Ken LaPoma fell to Jessica Christopher and Amy DeCieeschower by scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Shultz excels on volleyball court

Junior setter Shelly Shultz powered a Roxbury comeback that gave the Gaels a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten West Morris in a girls volleyball match on Thursday. It was the fourth straight "W" for the undeafeated Gaels.
Shultz delivered eight straight service points in the third game as Roxbury rallied to a 6-15, 15-5, 15-6 victory over the Highlanders. Outside hitter Jackie Canbcelliere blasted nine kills and scooped up 18 digs while senior middle blocker Kat Piso recorded eight kills and 13 digs for the Gaels.
On Saturday, Roxbury and Randolph battled to a scoreless draw after two overtime periods in an IHC - Iron Division boy soccer match played in Succasunna. Gaels' keeper Anthony Wright came up with six saves to register his second shutout of the season. Billy Chung came the closest to snapping the scoring drought on a breakaway but was thwarted by Ram goalie David Pekarek.
Roxbury blanked West Morris 3-0 in an IHC - Iron Division girls soccer match on Wednedsay to even its overall record at 2-2. Junior forward Kristuen Leonard netted what proved to be the game-winning tally 6 minutes, 22 seconds into the opening half. Kat Christopher and Eric Peshken iced the verdict with second half goals while Peshkin picked up the only assist of the game.
On Thursday, Roxbury defeated West Morris 3-1 for its first win over the Highlanders in boys soccer since 1998. It was the third victory in five outings for Roxbury. The Gaels stuck quick when striker Erik Popson took a throw-in and deposited the ball into the West Morris cage for a 1-0 five minutes into the match.
Two minutes later, the Highlanders scored to knot the game at 1-1. Ryan Peters regained the lead for the Gaels when he scored before halftime and Popson added an insurance tally in the second half. Assists were credited to Marc Grossman, Gary Komenek and Scott Shea while keeper Anthony Wright came up with six saves.
On Saturday night, the Gaels dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to Randolph in girls soccer. The Rams jumped out to a 3-1 lead by halftime before Roxbury answered with a pair of second half goals to send the outcome to overtime. Elaina Holden netted a goal and dished off an assist while Kristen Leonhard and Jamie Rodgin tallied goals for the Gaels. Keeper Robin Gerber came up with 16 saves in the goal.
Roxbury dropped a 3-2 non-divisional tennis match to Morris Hills on Monday. Jacqueline Tomko posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mansi Mahti in the second singles match while the second doubles tandem of Tiffany Chen and Jen LaPoma cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Rachel Malchi and Devan Seidenberg.
The top doubles pair of Kim Russo and Kristina Tomphson fell in three sets to Nicole Peter and Lindsay Stewart by scores of 1-6, 6-3, 1-6. Lori Le dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Tra-Mi Vu at first singles and the third singles matchup between the Gaels Eliza Marantz and the Hills' Dale Diaz went to the Scarlet Knights by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Gaels Sports Highlights for Week Ending September 16, 2001

Spargo sparks Gaels in volleyball

Senior middle blocker Jenn Spargo was on target with her serves in the opening game to spur Roxbury to a 2-0 win over Mount Olive in a varsity girls volleyball match contested on Wednesday. Spargo recorded eight service aces, including five in a row in the Gaels' 15-1 rout of the Marauders in the opening game. Roxbury iced the decision by outscoring Mount Olive 18-16 in the second game.
Outside hitter Kat Piso snapped a 16-16 standoff, winning a pair of service points to finish the contest while setter Lisa Quinn picked up six assists.
On Friday afternoon, junior Shelly Schultz delivered six service points in a row and added a pair of aces along with eight assists to spur the Gaels to a 15-3, 15-13 win over Livingston. Piso chipped in with four blocks while senior outside hitter Jackie Cancelliere blasted five kills.
Jonathon Apwah turned in the top effort by a Gael harrier when he raced to a seventh place finish in the Freshman Division of Saturday's Roxbury Invitational. He completed the 2.2-mile course in 14 minutes, 15 seconds.
On Thursday on their home course, the Gaels dropped a 29-30 squeaker to Parsippany Hills in an Iron Hills Conference - Hills Division cross country dual meet. Kyle Henry was the first Gael to finish, placing fourth in 20 minutes, 31 seconds. He was followed across the line by teammates Steve Dungen (20:34) and Jim Gusman (22:04) while Apwah finished eighth with a time of 22 minutes, 41 seconds.
