Gaels Gridiron Highlights Ending Week of September 21, 2001

Gaels sink Vikings

by Dennis Wilson

Compliments of Roxbury Register

Yogi Berra's famous expression - "It ain't over till it's over" - was never a factor in Succsunna on Friday evening. Roxbury reached the end zone on its first three possessions and went on to rout Parsippany Hills 48-6 in an Iron Hills Conference - Iron Division gridiron encounter that upped the Gaels record to 2-0. On Friday evening, Roxbury travels to Essex County to battle the unbeaten Lancers of Livingston under the lights.
Sean Szarka, the Gaels powerfule 6-2, 210-pound running back, capped off the Gaels first march that covered 74 yards in six plays when he swept around right end and raced 28 yards to paydirt. A key play in the drive as a 36-yard aerial connection between senior quarterback Pat Davis and Szarka. Bryan Bischoff split the uprights with the first of his six straight extra point placements and Roxbury led 7-0 after 2 minutes, 28 seconds had ticked off the scoreboard clock.
On the second scoring drive, Par Hills moved its defenders up close to the line of scrimmage in an attempt to stop Szarka so Davis went to the air, tossing a 64-yard TD bomb down the middle of the field to split end Ryan Pavlosky.
Roxbury completed its first quarter scoring bing when Bischoff bolted the final 13 yards to paydirt that was set up by a 44-yard pass from David to Pavlosky. In the first half, Davis connected on 7 of 8 aerial attempts to 209 yards as he added a 45-yard TD strike to Derek Bischoff to build the Gaels advantage to 35-0 by the halftime break.
"Pat is key to our continuing success," said head coach John Quinn. "He has dedicated himself to becoming a better quarterback and when the other team gangs up on Sean, he is going to have to execute and throw the ball if we want to reach the level we are striving to achieve."
Szarka kept the Par Hills defense honest when he broke loose and scampered 27 yards into the end zone for the first TD of the second quarter,
Following the intermission, Szarka hauled in a 44-yard TD pass from Davis and George Tompkins completed the scoring parade when he blasted two yards over the goal line in the fourth quarter. The Gaels led 48-0 before the Vikings averted a shutout late in the final quarter.
Defensively, the Gaels front wall limited the Vikings to 39 yards of total offense in the first half while Roxbury accumulated 305 yards.
"We wanted to improve our run defense after the Morris Knolls game," added Quinn. "We made some positive strides in that area."
Livingston was impressive in defeating Morris Knolls 27-7 in Denville on Saturday. Quarterback John Pyun directed the Lancers to a 21-7 lead by halftime, tossing a 37-yard TD strike to Chris Volo in the opening quarter and adding touchdown passes of 20 and 6 yards to Mike Daniels in the second quarter. He completed 9 of 14 aerial attempts for a career-high 168 yards, six of which were hauled in by Daniels who picked up 101 yards. Volo, who churned out 101 yards rushing on 19 carries, caught three passes for 57 yards as the Lancers snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Knolls and posted their first 2-0 start since 1995.
While the Lancers possess the talent to offer the Gaels their biggest challenge to date, Roxbury will roll to its third straight win of the 2001 gridiron campaign behind the running of Szarka and the aerial strikes of Davis.

Gaels Gridiron Highlights Ending Week of September 14, 2001

Adieyefeh, Ziyad surpass century mark for second straight game
By Dennis Wilson

Head coach Jimm Kramer likes his team to run and his Marauders were up to the challenge on Friday evening in Parsippany. For the second straight week, the junior tandem of Josh Adieyefeh and Siraji Ziyad both surpassed the 100-yard plateau in rushing and the results was a 34-12 rout of the Red Hawks to give the Marauders a 2-0 start to the 2001 campaign. It is the first time since 1985 that the Marauders have won their first two games.
Adieyefeh was the top gun on the ground attack as he toted the pigskin 16 times, churning out 240 yards rushing. Four of his carries ended up in the end zone as he scored TDs of 6, 65, 81 and 46 yards.
In last week's 13-0 victory over Voorhees that snapped a winless skein that extended back to 1999, Ziyad keyed the Marauders' attack with a pair of touchdowns. Against the Red Hawks, he broke loose and dashed 95 yards to paydirt in the second quarter to build the Marauders lead to 14-0 by intermission. He accumulated 122 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Kramer, a member of the Class of 1986 at Mount Olive was a two-way starter on the 1985 squad, was pleased but cautious with the outcome. "We don't get any banners for winning two games so we still must continue to focus strictly on one game at a time."
"Our running backs are improving each week," continued Kramer. "Josh and Siraji have been two of our hardest workers in practice and our defensive unit has been getting better in locating the ball and making tackles."
Junior Kevin Halonski (6-5, 200) turned in a strong effort on the defensive side of the board, making good reads from his linebacking position.
Next on the Marauders agenda is a visit from Hanover Park on Friday evening with the kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM. The Hornets were idle last weekend after dropping an opening-day non-conference matchup to Colonia of the Greater Middlesex Conference.
Under head coach John Liberato, the Hornets have posted a 42-19 record over the last five years and shared the IHC - Hills Division title with Mendham in 2000 while posting a 9-2 record. This year's edition does not possess the size of previous Hornet squads, but Liberato always has his charges well conditioned and ready to battle to the final whistle.
With seven of nine returning letterwinners in the Class of 2002, it is a senior-oriented lineup that will battle the Marauders. The outcome could down to the battle in the trenches where the Hornets look to tackle Matt Yeskel (6-2, 270) and guards Rick Corbett (5-10, 190) and Mike Lazorko (5-8, 185) to lead the charge.
Mount Olive will counter with its front line that is led by senior Dave Milner (6-0, 220). This Marauder squad is gaining confidence with every game and the possibility of a 3-0 start exists when the final whistle blows n Flanders on Friday night.
